The Effects of Beta – Sitosterol on BHP and Prostate Health

by John Bradstreet

Many men will experience prostate problems over the course of their
lifetime. It is estimated that 50% of men over 40 experience some sort
of prostate symptoms and that depending on longevity that can go up to
95%. Some early symptoms of prostate disease are:

o Blood in the urine

o Impotency

o Urgent or frequent urination

o Burning feeling during urination

o Painful ejaculation

When first confronted with these symptoms it is a very frightening
experience. The word cancer or tumor itself has a very negative
connotation and for good reason. This brings fear and anxiety into
peoples lives. The good news is that many of the symptoms associated
with prostate cancer are also symptoms which are mimicked by a much less
serious condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BHP.

What is the Prostate

The prostate lies below the bladder which stores urine. It surrounds the
urethra which is the tube that urine flows through during evacuation.
The prostate is one of the 3 glands necessary for reproduction and
supplies about 15% of the total volume of semen. The exact function of
the prostate is still largely unknown but is believed to promote
survival of sperm cells by reducing acidity in the vagina.

What is BHP

Benign Prostaic Hyperplasis (BHP) is a condition that is also known as an
enlarged prostate. This occurs from an increase in the number of cells
in the prostate. This may occur in different parts of the prostate
leading to different prostate shapes. This is a common condition and in
no way associated with prostate cancer.

How can BHP be Treated

Now that we know what BHP is and what causes it, how can it be treated? For
many years it was treated by surgery. The most common surgical
procedure is trans urethral resection of the prostate gland (TURP).
While the majority of men undergoing this procedure reported improved
conditions it is not without it’s complications and needed to be
repeated in anywhere from 2-10% of men within 5 years.

Another treatment is through prescription drugs that also have a host of side effects.

Natural home remedies

More recently a number of patients have reported positive results by the
use of herbal remedies. For centuries ancient sages have were using saw
palmetto berries, stinging nettle, rye pollen, star grass and pumpkin
seeds to treat men with urological and prostate problems.

Century’s later scientific study has affirmed their importance in fighting these
disorders.

Is Beta-sitosterol Effective in treating BHP

Beta-sitosterol is a micro nutrient found in the cells and cell membranes of oil
producing plants. It is a plant fat known as phytosterols. In this
natural state it is very hard for the body to incorporate. Plant sterols
were first described chemically in 1922. It was found that pumpkin
seeds contained high amounts of the Beta-sitosterol. In its dietary form
it is obtained from saw palmetto which contains very high levels of the
substance.

Since then there have been many blind studies that have proven its effectiveness in the treatment of BHP. We have summarized a few for you review.

A very intensive study done over 31 years and involving 2929 men published in 1998 vol. 280 of the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that strong extracts of saw palmetto containing high levels of Beta-sitosterol improves urological symptoms and improved flow rates.

One of the most important and well done studies was conducted by Dr. Berges of the University of Bochum in Germany and published in the Lancet, vol 345 (1995). This study was done using 200 men, half of who received a placebo over the course of one year and concluded that “Significant improvement in symptoms and urinary flow parameters show the effectiveness of beta-sitosterol in the treatment of BPH.”

Saw Palmetto – Health Benefits and Side Effects

by Sarah  Bloomingston

History Of The Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto has been an active ingredient of several traditional
medicines. The aboriginal Americans used this entire fruit and its
extract as food and also for treatment of a variety of urinary and
reproductive ailments. The extract was also very popular with the
Mayans. They drank the fruit extract as an energy tonic. The Seminoles
used the Saw Palmetto as an expectorant and antiseptic.

Benefits Of Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto ingredients have excellent broncho-dilation and mucous
properties. They prevent irritation of mucous tissues and also keep the
bronchial tubes dilated. Irritative cough, chronic bacterial cough,
whooping cough, laryngitis, acute catarrh, asthma, tubercular laryngitis
and cough of phthisis pulmonalis are some of the pulmonary disease that
this herbal extract can provide relief from.

It has a positive impact on the digestive organs and boosts up appetite, digestion and nutrient absorption in the body.

The most prominent effect that the extract shows is on the prostate gland and sexual organs.

Effect On The Prostate

Before we take a look at the beneficial effects of the Saw Palmetto on the
prostate, we must understand the complications of the prostate.

The prostate gland is a walnut sized glad that secrets a seminal fluid to
nourish the semen in males. The urethra runs through the prostate and
when the prostate enlarges in size, it constricts the urethra and
disrupts urine flow.

The urine that gets held back in the bladder leads to serious UTIs.

It would be worthwhile to mention that the testosterone hormone gets converted into dihydrotestosterone [DHT] by the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme and this DHT binds with androgen receptors to cause hyperplasia [inflammation] of the prostate.

Ingredients in the Saw Palmetto extract act in two ways. They mimic the structure of DHT and block the androgen receptors, thereby preventing further inflation of the prostate. On the other hand they also inhibit the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme formation and eventually stop the conversion of testosterone into DHT [which is responsible for most prostate disorders].

  1. Hi Michelle. Yes, Saw Palmetto is used for both. Hair loss from hormone imbalance (usually testosterone) can be decreased with it.
You’re right about avoiding as many chemical additives as we can. There are so many that we can no longer avoid that we must do what we can. Cheers.

  2. This was a very interesting article to read. I will share it with a friend of mine who has repeated issues with his prostate.
I have heard of saw palmetto before, but it was in conjunction with hair growth. Is this the same thing? Meaning the same herb/plant?
It is indeed so much better when we try more natural sources for healing the body. Too many chemical additives can wreak their own kind of havoc with continuous usage.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Michelle

  3. Hey Tim I see how much you appreciate this info as it applies to your personal situation. And many men are in the same!

You are right, it is cortisol that lingers in the blood and creates inflammation, and in the prostate, swelling also.

Therein lies the holistic aspect of health – one system affects all the others, and sleep is vital.

To your health Tim! Thanks for your feedback.

  4. Hello Julienne. You make a very good point! The more education people can get especially about a dreaded aging condition, the better a life they can expect. It is a pity that healthcare systems don’t emphasize better lifestyles, and more open discussions about the problems that may develop as one approaches middle age.

There are so many ways to avoid the inflammation and swelling of the prostate. Just imagine a bunch of young guys discussing this over a beer…not so macho!

    Yet, that could change.

    Thanks for your input here!

  5. Hi Chas. I do not know about any periodic promotions for this supplement. Auto-shipping and buying three at a time seems to be the discounts that are offered.

Yes, saw palmetto is quite a wide ranging remedy. I know women who take it to prevent hair loss and most have a good result with it.

    To your health!

  6. Hello Shy. Thank you for leaving your feedback here. In my experience too, men will not complain or get things checked out as quickly as women will. And, unless they are familiar with natural supplements they won’t search for those or even ask their doctor. Surgery is wonderful as a last resort, in my opinion, but it is always good to try natural remedies. Regards.

  7. I wish I had known about this years ago, this would have been very helpful to my then common-law husband who did have to have surgery.  I know that he would have loved to have tried a natural remedy, rather then have to go through surgery.

This can be such a huge problem, especially since men do not like going to the doctor.  It is always best to go for a natural solution whenever you can.

  8. Hi K lee,

I have often used the separate supplements for prostrate issues, like saw palmetto, stinging nettle and others. It is a real pain to order several bottles of supplements over and over, and storing them takes up a lot of storage space. I am gald to finally see a product that contains the natural ingredients I prefer to use.

I was not aware of the many other health benefits of the ingredient in saw palmetto. I knew about the help for the prostrate, but did not know it reduced other types of inflammation!

Better sleep is also something I like to hear, I haven’t slept good in years! I think I am going to try this product! Do they offer any promotions during the year for this product?

Thanks for the help with my prostrate, K lee!

  9. Thank you for sharing with us this post on natural treatment for enlarged prostate. Most of the men over 40 live in fear that they are going to have prostate problem because that is what scientist said over many years. But we know well it is better to prevent sickness before it appears. There are some companies which sell food supplements and among them we find those related with prostate . Saw Palmetto seems to be good at prostate treatment too.

Your post is very helpful to many people who need to get such natural treatment.

    Best regards

  10. I’m 55 married to a 29 year old beauty. This hit home in a huge way. Thanks for the article. I knew saw palmetto was good for me but the information on exactly why makes me even more inclined to be more diligent and regimented about it. Getting up in order to urinate 4 – 8 times a night keeps you from really engaging in deep REM sleep, seems to me. This has several adverse effects. One, you don’t rest, so you are tired the next day. Two, lack of rest can increase cortisol (I think it’s cortisol. Whatever it is it causes you to gain weight.) Three, the first two seriously impact the quality of our lives as men.

    Informative and helpful.Regards,

    Tim
